Chance to take part in beloved ancient tradition of wassailing

THE SHAFTESBURY Tree Group has announced the return of its annual winter Wassail inviting the community to gather for this “much-loved local tradition” this weekend.

The Annual Wassail is open to everyone and will feature warm mulled cider, live folk music from local ensemble Tattie Bogle and an open fire around which residents can meet friends and neighbours.

The event takes place on Sunday (January 11) from 3pm to 5pm at Donkey Field Community Orchard in Enmore Green.

Wassailing has its roots in the Anglo-Saxon phrase “waes-haeil”, meaning “to be healthy”, and was traditionally associated with caring for orchards and encouraging a good harvest.

After experiencing a revival in recent decades, the Enmore Green Wassail has been held regularly since 2006 and has become a fixture of the local calendar.

The Shaftesbury Tree Group says the event is intended to celebrate community as well as the orchard itself.

Mulled cider will be provided free of charge, although donations to help cover costs are welcomed.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cups, mugs or flagons where possible.
