Calls for Shaftesbury police station to be reopened amid fears over rising crime

TOWN councils in North Dorset have written a joint letter to the chief constable and police and crime commissioner requesting more bobbies on the beat.

Councils in Gillingham, Shaftesbury and Stalbridge are drawing attention to inadequate policing, with members penning a letter this month following their respective full council meetings.

Shaftesbury Town Council (STC) told New Blackmore Vale there is growing concern among residents regarding visible policing levels, as well as recent increases in property crime including burglary, shoplifting, anti-social behaviour and speeding.

STC is requesting additional beat officers dedicated solely to the town in addition to a plan for increased visibility and patrol frequency within the three towns and surrounding areas.

Councillors are also asking for improved community engagement efforts to address resident and businesses concerns directly which may include re-opening the police station at Shaftesbury as a patrol base.

STC says it looks forward to a constructive dialogue and a positive response to this urgent community requirement.

Cllr Andy Hollingshead, who has been leading the campaign, said: “The safety and security of our residents is the number one priority for Shaftesbury Town Council

“We recognise the challenging resource environment facing Dorset Police, and that historically north Dorset is a safe area, but the current level of dedicated local policing is simply insufficient to meet the needs of our growing communities.

“I am grateful to Gillingham Town Council and Stalbridge Town Council in joining with us and we urge the chief constable and the commissioner to provide the resources necessary to ensure our towns continue to remain a safe and pleasant place to live and work.”

Earlier this month, we contacted the PCC and Dorset Police for a statement about the issue.
