A BABY was treated for smoke inhalation after a family’s ‘lucky escape’ from a fire at a house in Frome last night (February 21).
The incident unfolded at just before 8pm after reports of a blaze at a property in Bendalls Wharf.
Two crews from Frome were scrambled to the scene, where they found a fire in a bedroom had spread.
“Initial calls from one of the occupants stated there was a fire in one of the bedrooms of the two-storey, privately-rented home,” a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.
“Two fire appliances from Frome were initially mobilised and were on scene within minutes, whereby the property was confirmed to be well alight and an assistance message was sent for a further two fire appliances, which were mobilised from Warminster and Westbury.
“Smoke and flames were issuing from the front and back of the property on our arrival, and once inside, crews located the source of the fire as batteries used for bicycles.
“Crews worked well and quickly to isolate the gas and electrics and prevent the fire from spreading any further.”
“However, four casualties, including a baby, were treated by crew for smoke inhalation awaiting the arrival of ambulance paramedics.”
At just after 10pm, firefighters confirmed the blaze was under control.
“The fire, which started accidentally, caused 100% damage to the room of origin, 60% by fire to the first floor and 30% by smoke and water to the ground floor,” the spokesperson added.
“After being assessed by paramedics on scene, all four casualties did not need to attend hospital.
“Two neighbouring properties sustained slight smoke damage to the attic spaces but due to the effective work of fire crews no further damage was sustained to the row of terraced houses.”
