Awards for pet business launched after couple’s frustrating search for dog outfit

AN INDEPENDENT dog accessory shop that started life after a couple tried to tackle their pet’s wardrobe issue has been named Business of the Year.

A few years ago, husband-and-wife team Tim and Claire Downer decided to launch Smiley Myley Dog Accessories in Sturminster Newton after struggling to find a source for an outfit for their Yorkshire Terrier, Mylo.

Now, they have been crowned ActionCOACH Business of the Year at the 2026 Sturminster Newton Business Awards, as well as taking home the Dorset Tech My Favourite Business accolade.

“We genuinely couldn’t have done this without our customers,” said Tim. “They are the ones who have voted for us, who shop with us week in and week out, and who have kept us going through what has been a really tough year on the high street. This award belongs to them as much as it does to us.”

The pair’s retail journey began when they were searching for a well-fitting, good-quality onesie for Mylo, from which the firm takes its name.

What began as a solution to one dog’s wardrobe problem has grown into a dedicated dog accessories business, serving customers both on the high street and online at smileymyley.co.uk.

“The last few months have not been easy for independent retailers, with rising costs and increased competition putting pressure on small high-street businesses everywhere,” the pair said.

“Against that backdrop, taking home not one but two awards is being seen locally as a real vote of confidence in what independent, specialist retailers can offer.”
