Council teams work into early morning as Storm Goretti hits

DORSET roads faced challenging conditions overnight as Storm Goretti swept through the county, bringing sleet, snow, heavy rain and strong winds.

From midnight, council teams treated 11 of 23 gritting routes, focusing on higher ground affected by snow and slush.

The A37, A356 and C12 required a second treatment around 2.30am as snow settled, creating slippery conditions.

However, heavier rain and strong winds caused more disruption than the forecast snow, with multiple flooding incidents reported and support provided to Dorset Police at road traffic collisions.

Portland Beach Road was closed for several hours due to wave overtopping and flooding, with the worst conditions recorded around 11.30pm.

By 2am, conditions had improved enough to allow a full clean-up and safe reopening.

Council teams said that despite the difficult conditions, all incidents were managed overnight and there are no major ongoing issues this morning.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council thanked those who worked through the night: “Your hard work makes a real difference, helping keep Dorset moving safely through the storm.”

Motorists are advised to continue driving cautiously, especially on higher ground and areas prone to flooding, as residual water and slush remain in some spots.
