Residents and staff at West Abbey in Yeovil marked International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8 by spending it celebrating the achievements of wonderful trail-blazing women throughout history and receiving a beautiful rose.
IWD takes place on March 8 every year. It celebrates women’s contributions to society, raises awareness about the fight for gender parity and recognises organisations that support women globally.
Residents took part in discussions about women who have shaped history. They talked about the important women in their own lives and celebrated the achievements of their fellow residents. Helen Colaco, general manager at West Abbey, said: “We’ve all had a really interesting day thinking about the amazing women who have had an impact on our lives. It was good to share our experiences, take stock and reflect on how much society has changed over the years.”
Resident Eileen said: “It is amazing to think how much things have changed, just in my lifetime. It is wonderful that women have so many more opportunities now. Days like this are so important to make sure we keep going in the right direction.”
