Your chance to hear the dawn chorus with guided walk in Dorset

BIRD enthusiasts will have the opportunity to witness the enchanting dawn chorus this May – one of the earliest and most iconic signs of spring.

A guided walk will offer people the opportunity to hear the symphony of birdsong just before dawn, and participants will have access to areas of the Countryside Regeneration Trust property that are not normally open to the public.

Birding expert John Lockwood will guide participants in identifying the unique songs of different bird species at Bere Marsh Farm, found in Shillingstone, from 4.30am to 6.30am.

During last year’s walk, the group was able to identify 20 more distinct species of birds.

These included: pheasant, woodpigeon, carrion crow, rook, a jackdaw, blackbird, song thrush, mistle thrush, robin, wren, dunnock, blue and great tit, chiffchaff, black cap, a reed warbler, a very vocal garden warbler, chaffinch, and house sparrow.

Charlotte Weatherley, farm estate and community officer for Bere Marsh Farm, said: “This event offers a rare opportunity for bird lovers to experience the dawn chorus at its peak during the breeding season.

“We’re excited to host it once again this year, set against the stunning backdrop of Bere Marsh Farm.

“With John Lockwood’s expertise, participants will be able to immerse themselves in the sounds of spring while learning to identify the birdsong of various species.”

At the end of the walk, participants will return to the barn for a breakfast, including a bacon or halloumi roll and tea or coffee, all included in the ticket price.

Charlotte explained the dawn chorus is linked to territorial behaviour, with male birds singing loudly at dawn to showcase their fitness and attract mates.

They sing at this time because it’s too early for foraging, and the low light helps protect them from predators.

“We recommend wearing sturdy, waterproof footwear and suggest bringing binoculars for the best experience,” she said.

Tickets are £10 per person, or £8 for Countryside Regeneration Trust friends and volunteers.

As spaces are limited, advance booking is essential. This event is weather-dependent and will not go ahead in the event of heavy rain.
