Wincanton cycling club would ‘Wheely’ welcome new members

Wincanton Wheelers Cycling Club are inviting new members to get fit, make new friends and have fun.

The end of January is traditionally the time of year when many fitness regimes and new year resolutions start to run out of steam. If your own self-promise (“I will lose those Christmas pounds!”) have hit the buffers, then help is at hand (or foot) thanks to Wincanton Wheelers who are welcoming experienced and new cyclists to join them.

Established in 2017, Wincanton Wheelers was set up with the aim of becoming a cycling club catering for all abilities and ages. The club now includes disabled riders, autistic riders, those who pedal for fun, fitness, competition, all in a welcoming and encouraging environment.

Regular Saturday and Sunday morning rides, as well as evening rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays, set off from Wincanton Sports Ground. These range from social rides to more enthusiastic and challenging tests, encompassing a number of different terrains and routes. Time-trials, circuit racing, hare and hounds and charity events are all enjoyed by members. The club is even offering the chance to ride in a velodrome (for those with Olympic aspirations!).

The club recently brought smiles to locals with their annual Santa ride (as we reported on our website), so yes, if you saw a happy, waving group of Santas cycling through the Blackmore Vale in December, next year that could be you!

Steve D’Arcy, one of the founding members said: “We’re always happy to welcome new members and there are no set criteria. Cyclists can use their preferred cycles on club rides, some use e-bikes, road bikes, hand-cycles or those specifically designed for time-trials. The choice is yours.

“As a club we enjoy the luxury of friendship, banter and great exercise, nobody is ever left behind whether it’s a puncture, mechanical failure or simply fatigue. Cyclists can have a coffee break on route and no, we don’t all wear Lycra! There are no dress codes, just cycling for the joy of it.”

The Wheelers membership has grown year-on-year, with over 80 members to date, including men and women, adults and children and riders of all abilities. If you’re thinking of dusting off your old Raleigh and getting back in the saddle, it really is just like riding a bike.

Interested in giving it a spin? The club are keen to point out there are no obligations for those just wanting to give it a go. Head to www.wincantonwheelers.co.uk for further information and contact details.
