VJ Day memorial service planned in Shaftesbury

A SPECIAL service is set to take place in Shaftesbury to mark VJ Day.

On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered in the Far East, effectively ending the Second World War.

The day has been marked every since, as Victory in Japan Day.

This year will be no different, with the Shaftesbury and District branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) planning a short service at the town memorial, in Park Walk, at 11am.

It will be officiated by Edred Bowman, deputy branch chaplain, followed by a simple wreath-laying.

“All are welcome to attend and medals and decorations may be worn,” a spokesperson said.
