Vintage cars and more set for Donhead St Andrew village fete

THOUSANDS of people are expected to turn out for a traditional village fete next month.

The event, at Donhead St Andrew, will run between 1pm and 4.30pm on bank holiday Monday, August 28, at Stoney Hills Field, in Sands Lane.

Last year, organisers said the fete attracted nearly 2,000 visitors, drawn from across nearby communities and further afield.

More than 200 villagers from the Donhead St Andrew area are involved in putting on the event.

Highlights include a 40-plus vehicle Vintage and Classic Car & Bike Show, with an Annual Dog Show at 3.30pm.

There is a non-stop barbecue, beer and cider tent and cream teas on offer, with lots of seating to enjoy vintage jazz from The Sunset Cafe Stompers.

There’s a Bottle Tombola and a live auction of seasoned logs, a spokesperson said.

“Selling stalls at the fete are always very well stocked and include cakes and biscuits, preserves and chutneys, plants and gardening equipment, fashion and accessories, books, pictures, prints and frames, toys and games, gifts, jewellery, CDs, DVDs and records,” they added.

“There’s fun and games for all the family.”

New this year are a number of displays including live alpacas, willow weaving, bonsai growing and climate change, they said.

“It all adds up to an afternoon of fun and enjoyment for all ages and the fete supports very worthy county and local causes.”

Causes and charities being supported by the event include both Wiltshire and Dorset Air Ambulance Services, Salisbury Hospice, Tisbus, Happy Gathering and St Andrew’s Church.

Last year saw more than £20,000 handed to good causes after the fete.
