A LARGE crowd gathered in Mere last Wednesday (August 6) to show solidarity with the people of Gaza.
More than 60 people came together to pay respects to those that have died as part of Israel’s occupation.
One of those was Dr Nicola Grove, a long-time campaigner for a free Palestine, who gave an informative talk on the history of the occupation and shone light on the events of the October 7 attacks, where more than 1,000 people were killed.
A reading of an emotive poem about a mother watching her child dying through lack of food then took place, before a period of reflection for those gathered to remember all the souls caught up in conflict past and present.
The gathering finished with songs of hope from a guest performer, Rachael Dadd from Bristol, who led the attendees in the final song, “I believe that one fine day” (by Ali Burns).

A spokesperson said: “Passing motorists gave plenty of noisy support and we were very pleased to learn later that the neighbourhood policing team had been keeping a discreet, watchful eye on the event.

“One of our group had written to the local police to advise them of plans for the event. An email was received from the local police on Thursday ‘commending the choir and the singing.’
“We feel they are also to be commended for their good sense and for being on hand if needed.
“On behalf of those gathered, we have written to Keir Starmer with several key demands in support of the Palestinians.
“It is easy to dismiss this as wishful thinking, however as Israel’s actions degenerate into true evil, the anguished protest and growing outrage from people around the world are finally being heard.”
Future events are being planned, the details of which will be shared on the Mere Mutters Facebook page.
