Shillingstone community garden helps health and wellbeing

Shillingstone’s community-run health and wellbeing outdoor space, The Big Yellow Bus Gardening Project, is looking for volunteers.

The Big Yellow Bus Gardening Project is located alongside the trailway between Blandford and Sturminster Newton. It covers four acres of 100% pesticide-free land split into three distinct areas: the formal landscape garden with a 14-metre wildlife pond, sunken bird hide and a firepit; a growing space that produces fruit and vegetables for local food banks and the community, as well as a large cut-flower area; and a one-acre wild flower orchard that’s enjoyed by visitors as well as the resident bees.

Recent exciting additions to the Big Yellow Bus Garden Project include a 154-tree mixed fruit orchard with trees sponsored by local residents, a large classroom with wood burner, a stunning viewing platform overlooking the site from the trailway and a cycle borrow scheme, allowing members of the public to borrow a mountain bike and explore the adjacent trailway for up to three hours.

The Big Yellow Bus Project is run by a fantastic team of volunteers and makes a real difference to the local community. Anyone can help out, and whatever your background, age, employment or education status, there’s a role for you. Whether you’re a social media guru, are experienced in fundraising or events, have green fingers or simply want to spend time with like-minded people who are passionate about the benefits of an outdoor space, please do drop in for a chat or email hello@bigyellowbus.co.uk
