Sherborne serves up walking tennis for all abilities

A TENNIS club is inviting people of all ages and abilities to pick up a racquet – without the need to run.

Sherborne Tennis Club is launching new weekly walking tennis sessions as part of a drive to make the sport more inclusive and accessible to the wider community.

The relaxed social sessions will take place every Tuesday from 11am to 12.30pm, starting on April 14, at the club’s courts at The Terrace Playing Fields.

Open to all abilities, the games are designed to be fun, friendly and easy to join in with – especially for those with limited mobility or recovering from injury.

Walkling tennis is a slower-paced version of the traditional game. Equipment can even be provided for beginners.

Better still, the sessions are free not only for members, but also for non-members until May 26.

Organisers say walking tennis offers a great way to stay active, socialise and boost both physical and mental wellbeing, without the intensity of the traditional game.

The initiative is part of a wider effort by the club to welcome more people through its gates – and there will soon be another chance for the public to get involved.

In May, the club will host a 24-hour Tennisathon fundraiser in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Running from noon on Saturday, May 16 to noon on Sunday, May 17, members will take to the courts in shifts to keep play going non-stop for 24 hours.

The event will also showcase walking tennis and wheelchair tennis, giving visitors a chance to see the inclusive formats in action.

Members of the public are being encouraged to take part by securing a rally slot, with additional attractions including a raffle, auction and refreshments.

For organisers, it’s not just about tennis – it’s about bringing the community together while supporting a vital cause.
