SHERBORNE has been officially crowned the Dorset Town of Culture 2027.

The historic town has been recognised by the Arts Development Company, which hailed its “vibrant creative community” and a “bold vision” set out in its bid for the accolade.

In the town’s bid for the title, officials vowed to “showcase, strengthen and share its unique cultural identity while creating a lasting legacy that benefits residents and visitors alike”.

“The programme aims to open up new opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with arts and heritage, fostering collaboration, innovation and pride,” a Dorset Council spokesperson said.

“This programme also aligns closely with Dorset’s Cultural Strategy, particularly the priority of creating vibrant places, using culture to strengthen communities and enhance quality of life.”

Sherborne town clerk, Steve Shield, said: “Sherborne is absolutely delighted to be named Dorset Town of Culture 2027.

“Our commitment to ‘Culture Everywhere’ plans to bring inclusivity to everything we do, as well as making it accessible to everyone in our wonderful community.

“Thank you to all those that contributed towards our successful bid, which included the production of a fun promotional video, showcasing a variety of events proposed for next year.”

The win means in 2027, Sherborne will deliver a programme of events highlighting both its history and its forward-looking ambitions, Dorset Council went on.

“From festivals and exhibitions to community-led initiatives, the year will bring people together, uncover hidden talents and strengthen partnerships across Dorset,” they added.

“Sherborne’s historic character, defined by its iconic Abbey and medieval streets, provides a stunning backdrop for cultural activity.

“Alongside this rich history, Sherborne boasts a thriving arts scene. Festivals, galleries and creative enterprises are at the heart of Sherborne’s community life.”

Events set to feature include the Sherborne Travel Writing Festival and Sherborne PRIDE, alongside exhibitions at The Sherborne venue and the upcoming World Book Day Children’s Reading Festival in March 2027.

The town chiefs said they are “already laying the groundwork for 2027, with plans to establish a Community Cultural Partnership that will guide and support the programme”.

“This collaborative approach will ensure that the Town of Culture year reflects the voices and aspirations of the whole community,” they added.

Established in 2024 by the Arts Development Company, Dorset Town of Culture aims to celebrate the county’s diverse cultural offer.

Each year, one town is selected to deliver a programme of creative activity, supported by funding from Dorset Council and matched by the local town council.

Cllr Richard Biggs, Dorset Council Cabinet member for regeneration, economic growth and strategic assets, said: “Sherborne is a town with a remarkable history, a strong sense of identity and a flourishing cultural scene. Securing Dorset Town of Culture status for 2027 is recognition of that strength and ambition.

“The programme will not only showcase Sherborne’s cultural offer to new audiences but will also help support local organisations, attract visitors and create opportunities for people to connect with their community.

“Dorset Council is proud to support initiatives that strengthen our towns and help communities thrive.”

Bridport’s 2024 pilot programme engaged 10,000 attendees across 35 events, while the 2025 programme in Portland and Weymouth reached more than 15,000 people and involved 137 artists.

Wimborne, the current Dorset Town of Culture, has secured additional funding from Arts Council England for a community production at Kingston Lacy in September, titled HOME.
