On Sunday 13th March 2022 twenty members of Wincanton Wheelers took part in the adrenaline experience of riding in a velodrome.
Lining up at the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales, in Newport, the 250-metre oval shaped track with 42-degree banking at either end, gave the riders a day of high speed fun and is one of only five internationally recognised indoor velodromes in Britain.
Bike hire and the loan of cycling shoes, with cleats, was available for those who needed them. This was followed with a two-hour session, with a qualified coach, which enabled the wheelers to gain valuable experience. Anyone could take part and for many this was a new venture with some feeling a little apprehensive. However, it was not long before their confidence grew, helped by the expertise of the coach, and they were “flying”. Encouragement was offered by all to those with less experience and the members who did not ride were able to savor the atmosphere
It did not seem long before the session came to an end. Everyone expressed how enjoyable the experience had been, with their conclusion that they cannot wait to be back again.
