Ride out planned in memory of popular cyclist Mary Emerson-Reed

CYCLISTS from Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset are planning a ride out in memory of a popular biker who passed away after a crash earlier this year.

Mary Emerson-Reed passed away after an incident on the B3081 between Tollard Royal and Shaftesbury, as she made her way home on her bike from the Filly Loo event, at Ashmore Village Hall on June 23.

A popular member of the Gillingham Wheelers cycling club, the group has now organised a ride out on one of Mary’s favourite routes and are set to be joined form riders from across the three counties.

A spokesperson said: “Following the tragic death of Mary Emerson-Reed earlier this year, cyclists from Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset are getting together for a ride out across the Wylye Valley in search of tea and cake.

“This was one of Mary’s favourite rides and it seems appropriate for all on two wheels to come together in recognition of the great rides and many miles Mary spent with us on her bike.

“All cyclists are welcome and everyone is encouraged to wear anything pink which was Mary’s ‘go to’ kit colour.”

The ride will start from the Barton Hill car park, in Shaftesbury, at 9.30am on September 10. Three routes – 20 miles, 23 miles, 33 miles – will be on offer to Ginny’s Café, Boyton, with the aim of arriving between 11am and noon.

“After refreshments, riders are free to make their own way or route home,” the spokesperson added.

The ride is open to all and should you wish to take part it would be helpful if confirmation could be made by emailing tributetomaryer@gmail.com by September 8, to help the café with numbers.
