Ride and Stride event raises thousands to protect Dorset churches

THOUSANDS of pounds were raised to protect and restore Dorset churches this month.

Hundreds of people from across Dorset took part in the most recent Ride and Stride event which raises money for the Dorset Historic Churches Trust which provides grants for restoration work on historic churches.

The trust hopes to raise £100,000 this year – with the latest event raising more than £16,000.

The final total will be announced later in the year when the parish which raised the most money will be awarded the Morshead Trophy.

A spokesperson for the church said: “Some participants covered amazing distances, such as Peter Williams from Silton, who cycled 60 miles and visited 43 churches.

“However, much shorter journeys also attracted very generous sponsorship showing that people at all levels of fitness and ability were able to contribute to this annual event.”

The spokesperson added: “The trust is very appreciative to the large numbers of walkers, cyclists and horse riders who set out to raise funds by travelling from church to church and then collecting sponsorship for their efforts.”

In many cases, congregations showed their appreciation to those taking part in the event by offering cold drinks and energy enhancing snacks, along with a friendly welcome to the riders as they arrived.

The trust’s aim is to provide support to those responsible for looking after Dorset’s churches – often found in small, rural communities.

In many cases local people bear the full responsibility for repair, maintenance and security of their church, without support from the government or the central church.

Of the 400 churches in Dorset, 45 are listed Grade 1, the highest quality ancient buildings, and over 100 are listed Grade 2*, meaning they are of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them.

Dorset Historic Churches Trust is a non-denominational organisation dedicated to helping with this work to repair and maintain the county’s heritage.

There is still time to contribute to the total either by contacting your parish organiser or via www.justgiving.com/campaign/dhctrideandstride2024
