New store helps reduce single-use plastic and food waste

A new zero-waste food shop has arrived in Sturminster Newton and is providing residents with the chance to do almost their entire household shopping without the need for disposable packaging.
The Eco Market, in Sturminster House in the Market Place, stocks a wide variety of goods, from dried foods to oils and vinegars as well as cleaning, personal and beauty products.
Alongside providing a range of waste-free food, The Eco Market is putting a strong focus on buying plastic-free and eco-friendly alternatives wherever possible.
Joint-owner Caz Coleman said: “The environment and climate change and healthy eating are on everyone’s minds.
“We offer cleaning and food refills, personal and beauty refills, oils, vinegars, honey and oat milk on tap. We also have a great selection of homeware which is eco-friendly and plastic-free. Shoppers can bring their own containers, or we can provide them.
“They then weigh them and pick from a range of foods in gravity dispensers and scoop bins. We weigh the full containers again to see how much they are buying.”
The approach is perfect for those watching the pennies or buying in bulk, as customers can choose the exact quantity they need instead of being regulated by supermarkets’ pre-determined quantities.
For those who would prefer not to shop in-store, an online click and collect system is now available, as well as a delivery option allowing it to be accessible as possible.
