YEOVIL is set to get a new café bar – thanks to a growing chain which wants to open in the town.

Bristol-based Loungers UK, which operates a number of venues across the south west and beyond, is set to open the Barolo Lounge in the High Street.

A planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council for signage for the new café bar, at 17 High Street.

It wants permission for four illuminated fascia signs, two illuminated projecting signs and an illuminated menu board at the building, which was most recently home to TSB and Café Nero but currently sits empty.

“The property sits on a corner plot at the junction of High Street and King George Street in Yeovil town centre,” the application said.

“The elevation comprises three storeys, and a fourth within the roof level that sets back from the parapet.

“The building has a stone façade with decorative mouldings across stone mullioned windows on the first and second floor.

“The ground floor premises has a timber shopfront. It was previously subdivided and used as a café and a bank.”

The plans say the venue is set to be a “popular destination for locals of all ages, encouraging social interaction within the community” and will “complement the existing character of the area”.

“The Lounge café bar will be open throughout the day and into the evening, will be food led and will have a particular appeal to families – ‘vertical drinking’ is not encouraged,” it went on.

“The café/bar will be operated by Loungers Limited, a successful Bristol-based company that is expanding its Lounge units and Cosy Club restaurants across the country.

“Loungers Limited present a prestige offering and are experienced in dealing with listed buildings across the country. They have won awards for both the quality of their conversions and their product.”

The application said the group sources produce from local suppliers wherever possible and this “will benefit the local economy”.

“The hiring of locally-based staff and the increased footfall will inevitably aid the economy of nearby retail units, thus contributing to the economic sustainability of Yeovil,” it added.

Other Loungers UK venues in Somerset include in Street, Wells, Weston super Mare and Clevedon, and in Dorset the company runs Piazzo Lounge, in Wimborne.
