SOME hospital appointments will be postponed this week as consultants in Dorset join a nationwide strike.

The industrial action, part of an ongoing dispute over pay and conditions, will see consultants walk out on Thursday and Friday, August 24 and 25.

A spokesperson for Dorset County Hospital said patients whose appointments are being postponed will hear from staff.

“The consultants at Dorset County Hospital are vital for patient care and the running of our services,” they said.

“During industrial action, some medically-led activity will be postponed to ensure that we can provide safe emergency and inpatient care.

“You will hear directly from us if we have to rearrange your appointment – if you don’t hear from us please attend as planned.”

They said people should still seek urgent or emergency care if needed during the strikes and people with serious, life-threatening conditions will continue to be seen at the Emergency Department (ED).

“However, please keep 999 and ED clear for life-threatening emergencies,” they added.

Patients should visit NHS 111 online or call 111 for other urgent care needs, they said.
