A MAN who abused workers at a Wiltshire service station before attempting to drive off drunk – with a child in the car – has been jailed.

Michal Korgul, of Wyville Road, Frome, Somerset, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, two counts of common assault, assault by beating, and failing to provide a specimen of breath.

He was handed a 35-week prison sentence when he appeared at Salisbury Magistrates Court on July 23.

The 39-year-old was also disqualified from driving for 40 months and must pay £200 compensation to his victims.

The charges came after, at shortly before 10pm on July 21, police were called to Burger King at Grenada Services, Warminster, where Korgul was intoxicated and being abusive towards staff by throwing items and spitting at them.

Officers attended and spotted Korgul driving a vehicle in the car park, with a child inside.

Korgul was clearly intoxicated and alcohol was located inside the car.

He refused a breath test and was arrested. The child was returned home.

After the sentencing, PC George Malin-Davis of Wiltshire Police, said: “On arrival at the scene, officers found Korgul was visibly intoxicated, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. He was clearly in no fit state to be behind the wheel of a car, let alone in the company of a child.

“It does not bear thinking about what could have happened had police not been alerted and intervened.

“I’d like to thank the victims and witnesses involved for their swift courage, resilience, and flexibility in working with us to gain evidence and ensure Korgul was charged and put before the courts immediately.

“I am pleased that on this occasion; a custodial sentence has been given. Korgul targeted young female staff members who were just trying to do their job. His punishment reflects his total disregard for the law.”
