A SOMERSET cheese company is recalling a batch of goats cheese product after listeria bacteria was found.

Pennard Red Goats Cheese produced by the Somerset Cheese Company, based at Ditcheat, Shepton Mallet, has been recalled in a warning from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The FSA said: “Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

“However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.”

It said those over 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than a month old and those with weakened immune systems were ‘more vulnerable’ to listeria infections.

“Somerset Cheese Company is recalling the above product,” the FSA said.

“Point of sale notices will be displayed where the product was sold.

“These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”

Anyone who has bought the Pennard Red Goats Cheese is urged not to eat it and instead contact the Somerset Cheese Company for a full refund.
