Jamies Double Up!

Wincanton FC 2 – 1 Portishead Town FC

On a blustery Saturday, Wincanton welcomed Portishead Town to a windswept Moor Lane and posted yet another win to extend their unbeaten run to 9 games.

With former Premier League referee Mike Reid in attendance to assess the day’s referee, the game kicked off with Wincanton immediately using the wind to their advantage. The home side moved the ball nicely, keeping it on the surface and then making the conditions work for them, lifting the ball over the top for a number of well worked attacks.

Portishead’s defense and in particular their keeper worked hard and put in some well-timed challenges. Two excellent fingertip saves in the first 15 minutes kept the Wincanton fans (with their new bass drum) quiet. However, a goal seemed inevitable as Wincanton continued to pile on the pressure.

You wait for one Jamie goal and then two come along at once! Jamie Thompson opened the scoring after some smart passing. Then it was Jamie Irwin’s turn, who having already seen a couple of efforts saved, finally saw the net bulge. On the balance of play, with Portishead yet to register a shot on target, it was no more than Wincanton deserved and if it wasn’t for the fine goalkeeping display, the home side could (should?) have been 5 – 0 up.

Things got worse for Portishead, when having lost his head (and pressing it on another player), one of their most defensive players earned a second yellow, reducing them to 10 men.

Portishead came out much improved in the second half and played better with 10 men. But Wincanton stayed well drilled and comfortably saw out the game to keep their season’s momentum going.

With our reporter in attendance (thanks to the club for their hospitality), it has to be said the only downside was the crowd (and possibly the drum!). Wincanton FC are playing good football and deserve a bigger attendance, so if you are a football fan and want to see a live match, with their current results turning into an impressive run, get down to Moor Lane and join the ‘Yellow Army’. Drums optional!
