House plan for former Vale village chapel building

A FORMER village chapel could be converted into a home if plans are approved.

Woolley & Wallis, on behalf of Mr and Mrs Plowman, have submitted a planning application to Dorset Council that would see the building, in Partway Lane, Hazelbury Bryan, converted into a four-bedroom house.

No alterations are planned to the exterior of the former Methodist chapel, though the first floor would be extended internally to provide bedrooms and bathrooms.

“The external appearance of the building will remain unchanged – other than the extension of one window on the west elevation to make a pair of French casements – in order to preserve the character of the building and the surrounding area,” the application said.

“Converting the chapel into a residential dwelling is the most effective way to preserve its historical and architectural integrity.

“Repurposing the building for residential use will ensure its continued maintenance and protection from deterioration, which is often a risk for unused buildings.”

It said the proposed layout would create a “comfortable and functional living environment while respecting the chapel’s original architectural elements”, and would minimise structural changes and “preserving the building’s historical character”.

“The conversion will bring the building back into active use, contributing positively to the community,” the application went on.

“A well-maintained residential property is preferable to an abandoned or underused structure, which can detract from the area’s aesthetic and potentially pose safety concerns.

“Moreover, the presence of new residents can enhance the vibrancy and economy of Hazelbury Bryan.”

Access to the building will be off the existing route off Partway Lane, the plans said.

“By changing to residential use there will be no increase in volume of vehicles utilising this access and potentially a decrease,” it added.
