A GREEN energy company says it is the Glastonbury Festival’s ‘biggest fan’ after installing a 28m wind turbine – and solar panels – at the event’s Somerset site.
Octopus Energy said it had carried out the installations at Worthy Farm, in Pilton, in ‘five or six weeks’.
The company says the turbine, solar panels and batteries will make the event – which gets underway on June 21 – the ‘greenest ever’.
Greg Jackson, founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, said the Glastonbury installation showed how quickly renewable energy generation could be possible.
“Cheaper, greener power, that’s what renewables talk about all the time,” he said. “But how quickly can it be done?
“Well, at Glastonbury this year, in just five or six weeks from the day we ordered it to the day it was functional, we’ve built a 28m wind turbine and by the way, installed a bunch of solar panels.”
However, he said the turbine at Worthy Farm, resplendent in pink and purple and complete with octopus tentacles around the tower, was not necessarily representative of what could be provided in communities across the country.
“For communities that want it, renewable generation would make a real difference to driving down energy prices,” he said.
“And I do promise that other turbines won’t be quite so garish.”
The company said it also had big plans for upcoming UK festivals.
Glastonbury gets underway on June 21, running until June 25, with Pyramid Stage headliners Arctic Monkeys, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Elton John.
