Go-ahead given to extend railway line

Plans to extend North Dorset Railway (NDR) at Shillingstone are steaming ahead after Dorset Council granted permission to start work on extending the railway.

Work is set to start on September 1 to clear the site in line with the conditions set by Natural England, in order to extend a single line towards Bere Marsh Farm over Lamb House Bridge. Members, supporters and volunteers of North Dorset Railway have welcomed the news.

New chairman Phil Jacques said: “Exciting times at North Dorset Railway. On Friday, July 30 we finally received the news we have been waiting for – a letter of intent from Dorset Council that gives permission to start work on building the railway northwards from the Station.”

“On Monday, August 2, our site manager completed the schedule of works to begin on September 1, 2021 which will be the start of site clearance and construction of an artificial badger sett, in line with Natural England’s stated conditions. Our ecologist will oversee this work. Selective tree felling and scrub clearance in line with approved plans will follow shortly after this. Regular updates on progress will appear on our webpage. This is great news that will be welcomed by all our supporters.”

The plans have been carefully prepared to enable the railway to run alongside the popular North Dorset Trailway.
