Get your best boots on for town’s festival of walking

From King Canute to red kites, to historic churches, there are 17 fascinating trails to enjoy in Gillingham’s 2021 Walking Festival, which takes place from September 4 to 11.

The festival kicks off on Saturday, September 4 with a walk starting from Alfred’s Tower car park at 10am, taking in scenes of King Canute’s Battle with King Edmund Ironside at Penselwood.

Other walks will search for Red kites, buzzards and deer, taking in Win Green, and there will also be a Bat Walk and Nordic Walking taster session, as well as a yoga walk.
The festival will follow The Ramblers’ Association’s covid guidelines with 20 spaces on most walks and each walker limited to four walks in the first instance. However, names can be added to a waiting list for further walks and spaces will be filled on August 31.
