Flying the flag for Gillingham’s greenery

Gillingham Town Council has received the much-coveted Keep Britain Tidy Green Flag Award, as three of the town’s public open spaces are officially recognised as some of the best in the country
The town of Gillingham is celebrating after receiving not one but three Green Flag Awards. Open spaces at Rolls Bridge, Lodden and Shiresgate were all awarded the quality mark for public parks and green spaces, as were many more across the Vale, including Yeovil Country Park, Stour Meadows and The Milldown near Blandford Forum.
The news that Gillingham has achieved not one but three Green Flag Awards is testament to the care and dedication of the town and the team at Gillingham Town Council.
“Our public open spaces are carefully managed by enthusiastic and dedicated grounds team who are often joined by volunteers from the Gillingham Action for Nature Group and Green Gang,” said Gillingham Town Clerk, Julie Hawkins. “It is thanks to their hard work and dedication that this year judges awarded Gillingham the highest marks the town has ever received.”
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces.
“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making the sites in Gillingham worthy of a Green Flag Award,” said Paul Todd, Keep Britain Tidy’s Accreditation Manager. “This award is testament to all the hard work by the Works Manager, Simon Dobie, his team and the volunteers to ensure that it maintains the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
