Flooding recovery continues – with more rain forecast this week

ROADS and schools were closed, homes flooded and warnings remain in place after heavy rain battered the south west yesterday (Monday).

More rain is forecast this week after downpours on Sunday and Monday in Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset.

Somerset Council said Highways teams responded to more than 40 incidents on Sunday and Monday, many of them minor road closures due to flooding.

Meanwhile, more than 20 Somerset schools took the decision to close as a result of the bad weather and several libraries closed early.

At various stages, several major roads needed to be closed due to flooding: the A356 between the A303 and Crewkerne, the A358 at Donyatt, the B3227 at Norton Fitzwarren, A361 Greinton and B3168 Puckington/Curry Rivel.

Jetting contractors were redeployed from planned works to respond to flood-related incidents.

The council said it has been working with partner agencies to monitor the situation and will continue to do so, with further rain forecast for later in the week, along with strong winds.

There were reports of around 20 properties having some kind of flooding during Monday across the county.

And it is anticipated several hundred recycling and refuse collections may have been missed as a result of road closures, notably in the Yeovil and Crewkerne areas.

There may be further disruption today, if roads remain closed, the council warned, with crews returning for missed collections as soon as possible.
