Fire service pauses calls for trauma teddy bears due to “overwhelming” community response

A RECENT call to arms for knitters across Dorset and Wiltshire to create trauma teddy bears, which can be handed out to children involved in emergency incidents, has been paused as the fire service says it has been inundated with responses.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said the teddy bears, which ride on the fire engines alongside crews, offer comfort and reassurance to children who have been involved in rescues, fires, floods and crashes.

The bears come in a bag with support information for parents and carers to help the child if needed.

The fire service posted on social media to call for knitters to help create more trauma teddy bears, but two days later it announced that it would have to pause the call for the teddy bears as so many people had confirmed they would take part.

A post on Dorset and Wiltshire’s Fire and Rescue Facebook page reads: “A really huge thank you to everyone who has asked for the Trauma Ted knitting pattern, we have been overwhelmed by offers of support!

“Please bear with us (pun intended) while we respond to the various queries raised, including whether there is an official crochet pattern.

“We’re going to pause (paws??) the project for a short time until we have a clearer idea of how many bears are on their way. Thank you again!”

For more information on the scheme, visit the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue website.

To see if the fire service has started up the scheme again, keep an eye on their Facebook page.
