DOZENS of firefighters tackled a blaze in Dorchester that destroyed the roof and caused “significant damage” to a house.
Fire crews were sent to the blaze, in Queen’s Avenue, Dorchester, at just before 11am on Tuesday morning (August 11).
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) said six fire engines attended the incident – from Dorchester, Weymouth, Wareham, Poole, Portland and Yeovil (from the neighbouring Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service), with an aerial ladder platform based at Westbourne fire station also sent to the scene.
Members of the public were urged to avoid the area, and close doors and windows to shield from smoke as the crews fought the flames, with Dorset Police also in attendance.
At around 1.30pm, the blaze was deemed under control, with crews leaving the scene – to return for inspections later – at around 4pm.
“Unfortunately, the roof of the property has been completely destroyed, which has caused significant damage to the first floor,” a DWFRS spokesperson said.
“An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.”
