Dorset Police officer set for Royal Coronation role

A DORSET Police officer is set to attend next week’s coronation – after serving Queen and Country for most of his career.

PC Jim Perks has been specially chosen to take part in Operation Golden Orb, the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

He will be joining a contingent of officers lining the ceremonial route, representing police forces from around the country.

Jim is a frontline response officer with Dorset Police and has served since 2007. Before that he was in the RAF for 22 years and was awarded several medals for long service and good conduct.

In 2017 he was awarded a Commander’s Commendation for saving the life of a young girl who had jumped into the sea with a weighted rucksack. With no hesitation, Jim went in and prevented her from drowning.

“I’ve spent most of my career serving Queen and Country, so it’s an immense honour to be part of His Majesty’s Coronation,” he said.

“It’s not often you get a chance to be part of such a historic occasion and I expect my family will be watching at home, hoping to catch a glimpse of me in the crowd.”

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Lyne said: “Jim is a shining example of professional service. Over his years with Dorset Police he’s been a leader and mentor to many student officers.

“He’s an excellent officer and we’re proud to have him representing us. I expect he’ll come away with many memories to treasure.”

As well as Jim, Dorset Police is sending a contingent of officers as part of a wider mutual aid operation. They will include specialists from the Firearms, Roads and Dog Handling teams.

ACC Lyne continued: “This will be a significant occasion for UK policing and we’re happy to help our colleagues in London deal with what is expected to be the biggest public event of the year.

“Our officers will play their part in ensuring the safety of everyone there. I hope everyone who attends, including our officers, comes back with many happy memories of a momentous occasion.”
