Dorchester’s Keep Military Museum expects to be closed throughout 2025

KEEP Military Museum in Dorchester on Bridport Road is likely to be closed throughout 2025 due to building works.

The museum said its landlord, the Ministry of Defence (MOD), has been planning to repair or replace the roof of the iconic building for some time – with the MOD setting “a lot of money” aside for the project.

While scoping the building ahead of the works, builders reportedly found the roof may not be safe, meaning the museum (which initially closed on October 1) will remain closed until repairs have been made.

The museum announced “with a heavy heart” that this could mean it is likely to remain closed throughout 2025.

“We expect to be closed for the whole of 2025,” a spokesperson said.

“Meanwhile, the staff are working in the Army Reserve Centre on Poundbury Road.

“The staff will work on protecting the collection and preparing for the future.”

The Keep has been telling the stories of the regiments of Devon and Dorset that served the country for more than 300 years.

An online fundraising page has been set up to ensure the survival of the museum and to protect its collections, which has so far raised £27,501.25.
