Dangers of abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear to be discussed in Gillingham

THE dangers abandoned fishing gear poses to marine life will be the topic of a talk in Gillingham tomorrow (Thursday).

Richard Walker, chair of Ghost Fishing UK, will give an illustrated talk on the topic in the Vicarage School Room at Gillingham Library from 7pm.

Founded in 2015, the Ghost Fishing UK charity is made up of divers focused on removing abandoned, lost and discarded tackle – known as Ghost Gear – from oceans.

“We’re on a mission to make our waters safer for marine life and divers by eliminating this deadly threat,” a group spokesperson said.

“We pioneered the world’s first Ghost Fishing course and continue to train new divers. Our team is a dedicated group of volunteer scuba divers trained in advanced diving techniques to safely locate, survey and remove ghost gear.”

All are welcome at the talk, organised by the Gillingham Action for Nature Group, with a raffle and refreshments on offer.
