A NEW “relaxed” wine bar could soon come to Gillingham if plans are approved.
Plans have been submitted to Dorset Council which would see the vacant arts supply store Scenes, found on 16 High Street, converted into a wine bar, restaurant, deli and shop.
The applicant, Dr Philip Drew, said the business would operate a “relaxed continental style” wine bar, which would double up as a light breakfast/lunch spot that would provide a limited deli offering.
“It is envisaged that during the day this will focus mainly on the deli offering and light bites, switching to a more wine bar atmosphere in the evenings,” the applicant said.

“The wine bar will serve a limited menu featuring cheese, charcuterie, and a small range of pre-prepared meals.”
The shop could serve up to 40 customers at a time, with seating provided.
“We believe the change will provide a beneficial enhancement to the local community while maintaining compatibility with existing planning policies,” the applicant added.
Bar could provide “much needed” social space in Gillingham
The plans have received support from Gillingham Town Council, as councillors looked over the plans at a meeting last night (March 11).
They said: “The introduction of a wine bar, restaurant, and delicatessen will increase footfall, support local food and drink producers, and help sustain evening and weekend trade.
“The new business will create employment opportunities for local people in both hospitality and retail.
“Additionally, it will provide a much-needed social space for residents, filling a gap in the town’s leisure and dining options.
“With many traditional retail businesses struggling, it is essential to encourage new uses that keep the high street active and welcoming.
“This proposal will rejuvenate a vacant unit, contributing to the visual appeal and vibrancy of Gillingham High Street.”
