WHEN most of us envisage turning 100 years old, we might picture taking things easy and living a laid-back life.
But Sherborne centenarian Gerald White is taking a different road – quite literally – getting in the fast lane for a ride in a motorbike sidecar accompanied by a pack of bikers.
Gerald had always wanted to ride in a sidecar, so when carers at The Hayes, the Care Dorset home where he lives, told him they knew someone keen to offer him the chance, he jumped at the chance.
Tomorrow (June 12), the former tradesman will enjoy a ride-out, accompanied by motorbike enthusiasts who learned of Gerald’s big day.
Father of two Gerald said: “In my 20s my friend Eddie had a motorbike and sidecar, but he would never let me ride in it.
“Now, 80 years on, I will be pleased to finally make it into one. Bigger, grander and louder.”
To thank everyone who has supported, kitchen colleagues at The Hayes will be offering free sausage, bacon or veggie rolls to anyone who turns up for the 11am start time.
Biker Jon Barnes said: “Bikers are some of the kindest and generous people you will come across.
“When Care Dorset contacted me to tell me about Gerald’s wish to ride out again, I knew that I and other local bikers would love to come together and make his day bigger, grander and louder.
“I hope that Gerald and those close to him have an amazing day.”
Gerald and his pack of bikers will leave The Hayes and travel the seven miles to Middlemarsh and back again.
Care Dorset activities officer, Bev Williams, added: “It is lovely to be able to fulfil Gerald’s wish after 80 years of waiting to go in a sidecar.
“It’s something we’re looking forward to as a whole home. Being able to show people you are never too old is such an important part of our job. We feel very lucky to do what we do.”
