Castle Cary premises evacuated after forklift fire

A CASTLE Cary building was evacuated after a forklift caught fire.

Firefighters from Cary, Yeovil, Shepton Mallet and Wincanton, were called to the property at around 3.25am on Monday morning (March 11).

A Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Fire control received a call from the site stating there was a machine that had caught fire within a commercial building, staff had evacuated the building at the time of the call.

“The machine was a flexi forklift which was battery powered.”

Once the fire was put out, crews continued to cool the battery using a horse reel jet and a thermal imaging camera to check the temperature.

“The battery was then removed from the machine to outside in the open air where crews continued to cool and monitor temperatures,” the spokesperson said.

The cause of the fire was accidental, they added.
