Castle Cary bucks trend to hold carnival

It’s official – the Castle Cary and Ansford Carnival will be sweeping the light fantastic through the town on October 16 with a magical lantern procession.

The town is bucking the trend – it is one of just two places in Somerset going ahead with their annual carnival this year. It means the annual cavalcade can celebrate its centenary, due to take place in 2020.

“This was one reason why the Carnival Society were especially keen to put on a procession in 2021,” said society chairman Paul Birch.

He added: “We know it will be different this year. It’s about everyone in Cary and Ansford celebrating as a community that we are coming out of the pandemic and looking forward positively to the future.”

There are already some great walking entries, a few small floats, plus twirling majorettes and three stomping bands. And the procession will feature the magical new lantern procession. Already local primary schools are signed up to create some amazing entries, including Castle Cary, Wincanton, and North Cadbury.

Paul added: “This year we are welcoming everyone into the procession. We would love it for local clubs, societies, families and friends to enter – you don’t need a float, and walking entries can be easier than people think. “Often simple ideas work best – a funny take on your club or organisation, your favourite TV programme, or band.”

The Castle Cary and Ansford Carnival has existed in its present form for more than 40 years, but its history actually dates back to 1920. Popularly known as Somerset’s Family Carnival, it takes place on the second Saturday in October. The Children’s Carnival usually takes place on the afternoon of the preceding Saturday.

The carnival costs £8,000 raised by volunteers.
The carnival committee is hosting their inaugural Family Race Night with Brue Valley Rotary on October 2 at Caryford Hall, Maggs Lane to raise funds.

Society Hon President Di Pinnions said: “Just like a normal horse racing event you bet on your horse ahead of a race, and see how they finish. The good news for us is that this time carnival also wins!”

Tickets are £10 including a buffet supper, from Sue Pexton and Di Pinnions on 01963 351307 or Heather’s Flowers. All the news on Castle Cary’s carnivals can be found at ccacs.org.uk.
