Blandford nursery bids to increase places with new extension

A NURSERY near Blandford could be expanded to provide space to accommodate a greater number of children due to demand.

Plans have been submitted to extend the first floor of the Old School Nursery at West Street in Shapwick, Blandford.

The plans also detail new ground floor partitions to create an additional playroom, a renovation of the kitchen and the inclusion of solar panels and an air source heat pump.

Agent Roger Wilkinson Architectural & Building Services, on behalf of the applicant, said the building no longer provides sufficient accommodation to satisfy demand.

They said: “The proposed extension would be subservient to the existing school building and set back from the highway; it will have a minimal impact on the appearance of the building and cause no harm to the character of the conservation area – nor interrupt important views into or out of it.”

They added: “The proposed work will ensure the continued occupation and maintenance of the building for the future.”

The building was originally created as an agricultural barn attached to nearby Bishops Farm before it was extended and converted to Shapwick C of E School by the Bankes Estate in the latter part of the 18th century.
